The school registers documented when children started at Tinui School and when they left. Smaller schools - such as Ngapopatu, Mangapakeha and Whakataki - held classes while there were sufficient children to attend and when the school-aged population dropped too low they were closed and children typically headed for Tinui School.
The roll contains multiple entries for some students, reflecting their migration from Tinui, to another school, then back to Tinui, or further afield.
School registers pages from 1876 to 1881 are missing, along with the names of the first 35 students to attend Tinui School.
