Tinui School started classes on 9 October 1876. The teacher's residence and school were one building in the early days, so once numbers started to build up, it must have a bit cramped in the 6.10 m × 4.27 m (20 ft by 14 ft).
In 1883 a purpose-built school was erected in the grounds. This building continued in use until 1955, when the new school in Charles Street was opened.
Tinui School logbooks
The Tinui School logbooks provide a wonderful resource as head teachers/masters noted any particular events that had occurred, including the dispensing of corporal punishment.
The transcribed logbooks - with news items about the school - are being added to this website. Thank you to Robin Carlyon, who transcribed the rural school logbooks for the entire Wairarapa.
